Jehovah's Witnesses are members of an international religious sect who believe that Jesus Christ will inevitably return and bring about the end of the world. Jehovah’s Witnesses maintain that all organized religions, governments, and political parties are sinful. While under Nazi control, Jehovah’s Witnesses in German-occupied territory would not swear allegiance to the state, serve in the army, or give the Nazi salute. Because of this, they suffered considerable persecution, including deportation to concentration camps and death camps. An estimated 5,911 Jehovah's Witnesses were imprisoned, and as many as 2,000 died as a result of Nazi persecution.
